Bookish Software / Sites
🏆Vellum (Book formatting, Vellum costs ~$200 and only works on an Apple computer (not an iPad!) or through a PC-friendly "virtual machine" service like Mac in Cloud, which is what I use.)
Atticus (Book formatting, Atticus costs ~$150 and works on a PC. I personally found it very frustrating and user-unfriendly and opted for Vellum instead. Caveat Emptor.)
Beventi (Book event preorder service provider. Free to use (a small % is taken from each successful sale as a fee) and browser-based; no download required. Heavily used by indie authors for preorders before book cons and signings.)
Canva (The holy grail of graphics programs for bookish folks that aren't quite photoshop-level tech savvy, Canva Pro costs ~$15 a month and can be used to design everything from book covers to promotional material to author banners for shows. Heavily used by indie authors; make sure to double-check your graphic asset sources (aka stuff found under "elements") to make sure whatever you're using has the appropriate rights for your project and isn't made with AI. There is a free version, but it's exponentially less powerful and has much fewer graphic asset options.)
Kindle Create (Book formatting, Kindle Create is free, but very minimalist/simple. I also found it frustrating to use - think along the lines of trying to insert a picture into an MS Word doc.)
Scrivener (Writing , formatting, and organizational tool. Windows-based Scrivener costs $59 and is a downloadable program, but you can use the code LEARNSCRIVENER for 20% off.)
